New Zealand Tour 2022 - FAQs

In order to assist you before or after making a booking, you can view the answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive from our tour guests below. If you have another question or have a further query relating to the below questions, feel free to email as at [email protected] and we will be more than happy to help you.

Before I Book

The match locations have not yet been announced but will likely include two matches in Auckland and one in Wellington (like with the British & Irish Lions 2017). If there is only one match played in Auckland then Dunedin would be favourite to host a match along with Wellington. We expect match locations to be confirmed later in the year.

Ireland are due to play New Zealand on the 2nd, 9th and 16th July 2022.

We have based our three match tour on the 1st Test in Auckland, the 2nd Test in Wellington and the 3rd Test back in Auckland.

Should they change from our itinerary then we guarantee 100% that your tour will still include Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown. If a match is played in Dunedin or Christchurch then these two locations will simply replace Rotorua and Taupo. Prices quoted will not change if a match location changes.

It is a long way to travel to New Zealand and we figure that some people would like to extend their stay after the last Test match. Our Bolt On tour gives you an additional week in New Zealand exploring brand new destinations on the South Island.

Based on our current tour itinerary then our Bolt On tour is as follows:

  • Sunday 17th July: Final night in Auckland
  • Monday 18th July: Fly to Dunedin (for 2 nights). Social night at a local rugby club.
  • Tuesday 19th July: Day at leisure.
  • Wednesday 20th July: Transfer to Christchurch (for 2 nights).
  • Thursday 21st July: Day trip on the amazing Tranzalpine Express (included).
  • Friday 22nd July: Depart for Blenheim (for 1 night) via Kaikoura for a whale watching experience (included). Then continue to Wither Hills winery in Blenheim for a late lunch and wine tastings (all included).
  • Saturday 23rd July: Depart to Nelson (for 2 nights) in time to visit the world-famous Nelson market – ideal for gifts to take back home.
  • Sunday 24th July : Day at leisure.
  • Monday 25th July: Fly from Nelson to Auckland and connect for your flight back to Dublin.
  • Tuesday 26th July: Land back in Dublin!

If one of the matches takes place in Christchurch or Dunedin then we will revise the Bolt On tour accordingly to take in locations that you did not get to visit. This will most likely be on the North Island and include Rotorua, Taupo and Napier.

Former Irish international and Leinster defense coach, Kurt McQuilkin, will also be meeting up  with us on tour.

Expect other guests along the way. For example, in 2017 we also had Alan Quinlan, Martyn Williams and Brent Pope on tour with Rugby Travel Ireland. Other legends that joined us at various events included Ian Jones, Rob Henderson, Ryan Jones and Mike Mullins.

We truly appreciate that these are uncertain times when it comes to rugby and travel. No one knows what the future holds for sure, but we want to reassure you that all of us at Rugby Travel Ireland are ready and waiting to provide you with a trip of a lifetime. We will always do so with the health and safety of both our clients and staff at the very forefront of everything that we do. We wish to reassure you that should the tour not proceed for the following reasons, you are entitled to a full refund (less €50 admin fee per person):
– If government advice changes and it becomes illegal to travel abroad.
– If the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Ireland/FCDO in the UK advises against non-essential travel abroad.
– If the government for the destination you’re travelling to decides to enforce quarantine on arrival and there isn’t the option to forgo this quarantine
period by providing evidence of a negative COVID-19 test.
– If you have a booking to any destination that requires you to quarantine in a hotel on your return.

If the decision is made to play matches behind closed doors before you have departed on tour you will receive a full refund of monies paid.

We are planning to work with both Qatar and Emirates with departures from Dublin and quick transfer times at their Middle East hubs. We have long standing relationships with both airlines and they are the best of the best.

If you would like to fly with a particular airline, please get in touch with our team and we can quote accordingly.

If international flights are not required, then we can offer the tour that you wish to book less €1,000 per person. Simply contact us to book accordingly.

Single occupancy incurs a single room supplement because we are charged on a per room basis, but we cost the package based on two people sharing that cost.

We are happy to help pair you with another tour guest with the same request. We will put you directly in touch with each other and you can both make the decision whether you are a suitable match to share a room throughout the tour. If a suitable person cannot be found the single room supplement will be payable in full no later than six weeks prior to the tour.

Executive coach transfers are included throughout. In fact, the company we are using are a brilliant family run business that we used throughout Lions 2017. A modern fleet and very friendly drivers that are all mad keen to meet you!

Internal flights are also included as per itineraries.

My Booking

It is a condition of booking with Rugby Travel Ireland that you and the rest of your group MUST have travel insurance in place. Your travel insurance should cover the cost of cancellation, medical expenses, loss of luggage or money, personal liability claims, participation in activities and costs of assistance (including repatriation) in the event of accident, injury, illness or death. You should check any exclusions and, in particular, that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake. We strongly recommend that you are covered from the time of booking as this may assist you in recovering monies paid in the unfortunate event of you having to cancel your trip.

We recommend the services of our preferred travel insurance partner, Blue Insurance. If resident in the Republic of Ireland, click here for a quotation and if resident in the UK click here for a quotation.

Yes you can, subject to availability. During the booking process you can make this request and we will quote accordingly.

Due to the nature of group contracts with airlines, airmiles cannot be exchanged for a reduction in the tour price. The miles themselves can usually be added to your account.

Please note that online check-in is also unlikely and this is due to the limitations imposed by group contracts with airlines. You will instead be sent your booking reference as part of your tour itinerary.

Group hotel contracts mean that reward points cannot be used to reduce the tour price. However, you should be able to avail of benefits at the hotel depending on the status of your reward points with a particular hotel group.

There are no direct flights to New Zealand from Ireland due to the distance involved. We will be offering routings mainly via Doha or Dubai with very good connection times.

We work on a ROH (run of house basis) which means that you will be staying in a room allocated by the hotel.

Yes, you can request this but it is subject to availability. Please contact us to request a quotation.

Yes, subject to availability. Please get in touch with our team to organise your flight deviation. Please note, there may be a price difference.

Please note that guests with delivery addresses outside of the UK and Ireland will incur postage costs for their tour packs.

We have our own Rugby Travel Ireland App so a number of weeks before you depart you will be emailed a tour itinerary PDF plus the login details for your personalised tour app. This is very handy when on tour and includes plenty of additional information about each location that you will visit etc.

All three Test match tickets will be distributed to everyone on the evening before the first Test match.

Our policy has always been not to treat customers like sheep! We have provided numerous excursions and events as well as giving you plenty of time at each destination to do your own thing.

On Tour

If you miss a transfer while on tour, it is your responsibility to reach the next destination at your own expense.

You will be travelling during winter time in New Zealand so expect very similar weather to Ireland, especially on the North Island. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. With a light dusting of snow, Queenstown and the Central Plateau are transformed into winter wonderlands. Expect some rain and some sunny days and everything inbetween!

The New Zealand dollar is the official currency. The exchange rate is currently €1 = $1.70 NZD & £1 = $1.97 NZD. Rate correct as of 21st May 2021.
